MANILA, Philippines — Gina Catabay, 54, walked barefoot from her home in Quezon City toward Manila, hoping to touch or kiss the Black Nazarene, an icon of a dark-skinned Jesus Christ, as its carriage was pulled through the streets of the capital, in one of the world’s biggest displays of religious devotion.

MANILA, Philippines — Celebrating the return of the annual Black Nazarene “traslacion,” or grand procession, after three years, Cardinal Jose Advincula, Manila archbishop, urged devotees on Tuesday to live as Jesus Christ’s example for others.

He said the theme of this year’s Feast of the Black Nazarene, “We want to see Jesus,” was a reminder to Catholics to turn to Jesus and let others see Jesus through them.

MANILA, Philippines — Quiapo Church recorded a total count of over six million devotees who took part in various activities to mark the Feast of the Black Nazarene on Tuesday.

The exact figure is 6,113,598 devotees, totaled from all records at 7:44 p.m. when the Nazarene was returned to the church.

One of them is Jimmy Molera, who has been consistently selling towels and handkerchiefs with a picture of the Black Nazarene on the day of the feast every year for decades.

MANILA, Philippines — Attributing a miracle to the Black Nazarene, a septuagenarian said she has been a devotee “since birth”  and remains one for life.

“Every time I have problems, I ask the Nazarene for help. And I will as long as I’m alive,” Anita Rivera, 71, told INQUIRER.net. while personally witnessing this year’s traslacion for the Feast of the Black Nazarene.

MANILA, Philippines — Children are often seen riding carts alongside replicas of the Black Nazarene every Traslacion — the parade of Christ’s image through the streets of Manila — but what could be the reason behind this?

When asked, several devotees answered that placing their kids atop the carts does not bear any special meaning for them. It’s just that the young ones are much lighter and more suited for catching other enthusiasts’ towels, wiping them on their replicas, and throwing the towels back to the crowd.

MANILA, Philippines — Quietly standing in the middle of the sea of Black Nazarene devotees was 80-year-old Benjamin Tolentino. He was silently saying his prayer, not for himself, but for his children and grandchildren.

“Happiness for them,” Benjamin said when asked what he prayed for.

Over 600 Black Nazarene devotees receive Red Cross assistance

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Red Cross reported that as of 6:00p.m. Tuesday, its personnel stationed along the route of the Traslacion 2024 for the Feast of the Black Nazarene attended to 643 individuals who required medical and other forms of assistance.

Two hundred fifty seven had their vital signs checked, 214 had minor medical issues while six others had major issues.

Thirty two were brought to nearby hospitals and medical facilities.

MANILA, Philippines — More than 6.5 million devotees joined the Feast of the Black Nazarene procession, roughly three times higher than the attendance expected by the local government of Manila.

MANILA, Philippines — Black Nazarene devotees were pleasantly surprised to see the new, glass-encased carriage or “andas” bearing the sacred image during Tuesday’s procession, saying it is a “welcome improvement” to the annual celebration.

Gerard Cordial, a long-time devotee, said it was the first time for him to see the Black Nazarene encased in thick layers of glass.

Carmel de San Sebastian has met the Black Nazarene at Plaza del Carmen in front of Minor Basilica of San Sebastian at 2:52 p.m. known as the traditional “Dungaw” (look), igniting thunderous cheers of “Viva” among the faithful.

MANILA, Philippines — The rope used to pull the carriage of the Black Nazarene snapped.

The incident happened along the corner of Arlegui Street and Quezon Boulevard, government and church officials confirmed on Tuesday afternoon.

Initially, sources on the ground told INQUIRER.net that the rope snapped, causing delays in the Traslacion procession which was at Arlegui Street during that time.

MANILA, Philippines — Despite odds and grievances, true Black Nazarene devotees stand out as they know how to love like Jesus, a priest said during Tuesday’s morning mass at Quiapo Church in Manila.

Videos taken by netizens that were sent to INQUIRER.net showed members of the Hijos del Nazareno pulling the image of the Black Nazarene along Vergara Street, partly delayed by devotees trying to jump on the new carriage despite Quiapo Church’s prohibition against climbing on the “andas.”

MANILA, Philippines — The estimated number of participating devotees in the 2024 Traslacion has exceeded the 1-million mark, reported Quiapo Church Command Post on Tuesday morning.

According to the command post, the number of devotees joining the procession has reached about 1,008,000.

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) reported that 27 people, including one who suffered from head trauma and a pregnant woman who complained of abdominal pain, were sent to the hospital amid activities for the Black Nazarene in Manila on Tuesday.

The PRC said the eight other individuals who were sent to the hospital for appropriate treatments had minor health issues such as fever, cough, dizziness, body weakness, minor wounds, and ankle sprain, chest pain, hyperventilation, elevated blood pressure, and infected wound.

Cell phone signals will be temporarily shut down in parts of Manila as part of security measures for the Feast of Black Nazarene on Tuesday, according to Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos.

“Tell your families not to panic right away when they cannot contact you because this is being done every year,” the official said on Monday.

MANILA, Philippines —  A crowd of barefoot devotees following the image of Christ carrying the cross began their journey from Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo Church at 4:45 a.m. on Tuesday.

After being suspended for three consecutive years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Quiapo Church earlier said that this year’s Nazareno will return to its traditional observance.

MANILA, Philippines — Some Black Nazarene devotees at Quirino Grandstand sustained minor injuries during activities in preparation for the icon’s return to Quiapo Church.

However, no major cases have been reported so far, Rochelle Purificacion, chief of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority medic team deployed in the area, told INQUIRER.net.

As of 10:45 p.m. on Monday, the crowd estimate within the area has climbed to 313,450 according to the Manila Police District (MPD).

MANILA, Philippines — The Quiapo Church on Monday said it expects the 2024 Traslacion to proceed at a faster pace compared to previous years.

MANILA, Philippines — Environmental watchdog group Ecowaste Coalition on Sunday urged devotees of the Black Nazarene to ensure that Rizal Park in Manila and the entire conduct of the “traslacion” or grand procession on Jan. 9 would remain free from smoke and litter.

“As Black Nazarene devotees line up for the traditional ‘pahalik’ at Quirino Grandstand, we appeal to everyone to be considerate and refrain from smoking and littering in Metro Manila’s largest urban park,” said Ochie Tolentino, zero waste campaigner of Ecowaste.

MANILA, Philippines — The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) is all set for the Traslacion 2024, or the Feast of the Black Nazarene, in Quiapo, Manila and has already commenced a send-off ceremony for its personnel at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila on Sunday. 

In a statement on Sunday, the NCRPO, along with the Manila Police District and the city’s local government, assured the public of a secure and safe feast as it plans to deploy over 15,000 personnel from January 9 to 10.

Manila City gov’t bans fireworks for Traslacion 2024

MANILA, Philippines — The City of Manila has declared a fireworks and pyrotechnics ban from January 8 to 9 during the Feast of the Black Nazarene.

In a memorandum on Friday, Manila Mayor Maria Sheilah “Honey” Lacuna–Pangan declared the ban to maintain the sanctity of the celebration.

“Whereas, in order to preserve the solemnity of the occasion and avoid danger and injuries to the Black Nazarene devotees, as well as to protect the physical structures within the area where the Black Nazarene will hold procession, and the general environment against incidental fires and other environmental impacts on the use, sale, manufacture and distribution of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices, it is imperative that a ban on firecrackers be imposed on the said event,” the memorandum said.

Devotees of the Black Nazarene who will join the “traslacion” on Jan. 9 may have to brace for wet weather as a shear line is expected to affect parts of Luzon and Visayas.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are likely over the eastern sections of Southern Luzon and Eastern Visayas due to the shear line.

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has enough law enforcers to secure the official visit of Indonesian President Joko Widodo and the Black Nazarene activities.

Authorities urged devotees to wear face masks and observe physical distancing while participating in activities marking the Feast of the Black Nazarene in the City of Manila on Jan. 9, especially during the “traslacion,” or the grand procession, to prevent a surge in COVID-19 cases. At a news briefing at Quiapo Church on Thursday, organizers said that minimum health protocols would be enforced during Masses and at Quirino Grandstand where the venerated image of the Black Nazarene would be put on display starting on Jan. 6.

“We request those who will attend Mass (inside Quiapo Church) to wear masks. In Manila, (COVID-19) positive cases are not that high but to avoid any surge, we hope the public will cooperate,” Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna said.

MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Thursday that it apprehended 58 drivers and towed 22 illegally parked vehicles vehicles in its joint clearing operation with the City of Manila ahead of the annual procession of the Black Nazarene on January 9.

“Clearing operations are part of the government’s preparations so that routes are passable and obstruction-free for the safety and security of the devotees that would participate in the procession,” MMDA Acting Chairman Romando Artes said.

DOH: NCR hospitals on ‘code white’ alert for Traslacion 2024

MANILA, Philippines — All hospitals in Metro Manila will be placed under a “Code White” alert status starting January 5 to 11, the Department of Health (DOH) said on Thursday in preparation for the Traslacion or Feast of the Black Nazarene on January 9.

Code White Alert, the DOH explained, means that all hospital personnel, including surgeons and nurses, are ready to respond to emergencies.

The health ministry added that eight of its emergency response teams, each equipped with ambulances, will be strategically deployed along the Traslacion route to provide emergency medical services to devotees participating in the annual feast.

MANILA, Philippines — Devotees of Jesus the Black Nazarene will be barred from climbing onto the carriage carrying the life-size religious icon when the procession of the Black Nazarene makes its return for the first time in three years in Manila on Jan. 9.

“Our first reminder is climbing is prohibited. No one will climb onto the “andas” (carriage) of our Lord Jesus the Nazarene so everyone can see him and he is the star of the procession,” said Fr. Jesus Madrid Jr., one of the recently ordained deacons of Quiapo Church, in a video released through the church’s social media account.

MANILA, Philippines — Authorities will implement a no-fly zone over the City of Manila during this year’s Traslacion or the Feast of the Black Nazarene on Tuesday, January 9, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP). 

Philippine National Police chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. said signal jamming in areas within Quiapo Church is still being discussed with the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) and may be imposed on the day of the feast.

Traslacion routes to get some road patch-up — DPWH

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said on Wednesday that it is set to conduct road maintenance activities along the Black Nazarene Grand Procession or “Traslacion” route to ensure road safety.

DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan has ordered upkeep to fix defects and other road hazards following a joint inspection with the Feast of the Black Nazarene Committee.

“Potholes, as well as tree branches and other road obstructions within road right-of-way, are now being cleared by our DEOs (district engineering offices) to ensure the safety of the devotees,” said DPWH National Capital Region Director Loreta Malaluan in a statement.

Traslacion 2024: PNP to deploy over 13,000 cops

The Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Tuesday that it is planning to dispatch more than 13,000 personnel and officers for the Traslacion or the Feast of the Black Nazarene this month, which will be held in Manila.

MANILA, Philippines — The mammoth Black Nazarene “Traslacion” procession in Manila will be held again after three years, Quiapo Church authorities confirmed on Thursday.

Unlike the last Black Nazarene feast held on Jan. 9, the widely revered religious image will be part of the procession from Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo Church on the same day next year.

MANILA, Philippines — A total of  5,602 police officers will be dispatched in Manila for the Traslacion — on the Feast of the Black Nazarene — in January next year, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).

The officers will be deployed for the procession from Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo Church, the PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo, said, citing Manila Police District director Col. Arnold Thomas Ibay.

 The “Traslacion” is the procession of the life-size image of the Black Nazarene from the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park to the Quiapo Church.
