MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Thursday that it apprehended 58 drivers and towed 22 illegally parked vehicles vehicles in its joint clearing operation with the City of Manila ahead of the annual procession of the Black Nazarene on January 9.

“Clearing operations are part of the government’s preparations so that routes are passable and obstruction-free for the safety and security of the devotees that would participate in the procession,” MMDA Acting Chairman Romando Artes said.

Artes added that 850 MMDA personnel will be deployed on the day of the procession for crowd control measures.

“A total of 850 personnel will be deployed to assist in traffic management, public safety, maintenance of peace and order, emergency response operations, and clearing operations,” said Artes.

Ambulances, rescue and other emergency response vehicles will also be deployed during the event, the MMDA said.
