Some Nazarene devotees figure in minor medical cases at Quirino Grandstand

MANILA, Philippines — Some Black Nazarene devotees at Quirino Grandstand sustained minor injuries during activities in preparation for the icon’s return to Quiapo Church.

However, no major cases have been reported so far, Rochelle Purificacion, chief of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority medic team deployed in the area, told INQUIRER.net.

As of 2:00 am Tuesday, a total of 90 incidents had been reported, according to Purificacion.

She said that 81 “medical cases” — like hypertension, difficulty breathing, and fainting — were logged, most of them involving senior citizens.

Also, nine cases of “trauma cases” — like minor abrasions and slippage — were also recorded.

“These are minor cases, we had no major cases so far,” Purificacion told INQUIRER.net in an interview.

At one point on Tuesday night, more than 300,000 devotees attended the Mass at the Quirino Grandstand.

The image of the Black Nazarene has been displayed there for the “Pahalik,” during which devotees were allowed to touch and kiss the image.

Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula Jr. presided over a “Misa Mayor” before the beginning of the procession.
