Some 250,000 mourners filed past Queen Elizabeth’s coffin at Westminster Hall in London during her lying-in-state, Britain’s culture minister Michelle Donelan said on Tuesday.

Britain said farewell to Queen Elizabeth II on Monday at a historic state funeral attended by world leaders, before a ceremonial journey past hundreds of thousands of mourners to her final place of rest.

Huge crowds gathered in London to watch as the queen’s flag-draped coffin, topped with the Imperial State Crown, her orb and sceptre, was carried slowly to a gun carriage from parliament’s Westminster Hall where it had lain in state since Wednesday.

In Hong Kong, hundreds kept up with Queen Elizabeth’s funeral on their phones as they queued for hours to pay their tributes. In Sydney, Australia, customers packed into pubs to watch the ceremony on screens.

Queen Elizabeth II’s great-grandchildren George and Charlotte attended her funeral on Monday, signaling the more prominent role they will now play as the children of the first in line for the throne.

The tens of thousands gathered in central London for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II fell silent and bowed their heads on Monday to follow her funeral service in Westminster Abbey and watch the procession of her coffin afterward through the city.

Some watching in Hyde Park dabbed their eyes and others sobbed during the service, while later, children were hoisted in the air or put on parents’ shoulders to see her coffin pass.

Tens of thousands of people, many of whom had camped out overnight, lined the route of Queen Elizabeth’s funeral procession on Monday and gathered in London’s parks to bid farewell to the only British monarch most have ever known.

Complete silence fell over Hyde Park as people who had been picnicking and chatting for hours, stood and watched the queen’s coffin brought to Westminster Abbey. Crowds are following the funeral service on large television screens or from a radio broadcast on loudspeakers.

A Paris metro station on the Champs-Elysees has been renamed Elizabeth II for the day as a tribute to the British queen during her funeral.

Signs in the George V metro station — named after the queen’s grandfather — were replaced on Monday as a mark of respect for the British sovereign, who will be buried later after a service in London.

The presence of Spain’s disgraced former King Juan Carlos at the state funeral of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth has prompted criticism at home, with one political party calling him a “criminal on the run”.

Spain’s official delegation is led by King Felipe and his wife Queen Letizia. Felipe came to the throne when his father abdicated in 2014 amid a series of scandals.

Thousands of people camped overnight in London to get the best spots for viewing Queen Elizabeth’s funeral procession on Monday. The best prepared had tents, sleeping bags, blow up beds and flasks of tea.

Others were sitting or sleeping on the ground in only their jackets. One couple were seen asleep just in their clothes, their arms interlocked for warmth, and, perhaps, for comfort.

The queen, however, will not be joining the host of other royals who are interred in the Royal Vault beneath the chapel.

When newly elected indigenous Australian parliamentarian Lidia Thorpe took her oath to office last month, she raised her fist above her head in protest and labelled Queen Elizabeth II a “colonizing queen”.

“It was like kneeling to the murderer,” the Greens senator told Reuters this week. “I had to swear my allegiance to a colonizing power that has caused so much harm to our people.”

Taiwan’s de facto ambassador in London received a “special invite” to sign the book of condolence for Britain’s Queen Elizabeth, the island’s foreign ministry said, adding he was given the same treatment as other dignitaries.

Britain, like most countries, has no diplomatic ties with Chinese-claimed Taiwan though they have close unofficial ones. Democratically governed Taiwan is largely excluded from most international events and bodies due to Beijing’s objections.

Britain’s new Queen Consort Camilla paid tribute Sunday to Queen Elizabeth II for carving her own role as a “solitary woman” in a world dominated by men.

In her first public comments broadcast since Queen Elizabeth’s death, King Charles III’s wife said it must have been “so difficult” for the late monarch, who inherited the throne in 1952 when she was just 25 years old.

President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, headed to London on Saturday to attend Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, departing Washington without any former U.S. presidents, who are not taking part in the somber event.

The White House said earlier this week that the royal invitation to the funeral, which takes place on Monday at Westminster Abbey, was for the Bidens only.

Princes William and Harry stood vigil at either end of the coffin of their grandmother Queen Elizabeth on Saturday, heads bowed as a line of mourners streamed past the late monarch’s lying-in-state.

The two sons of King Charles, attired in military uniforms, stood in silence at a 15-minute vigil in the vast Westminster Hall where the coffin has been lying since Wednesday, draped in the Royal Standard and with the bejewelled Imperial State Crown on top.

Former England football captain David Beckham said it was “very emotional” to pay his last respects to Queen Elizabeth II on Friday after he queued for hours through the night to file past her coffin.

The ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid star stood among the tens of thousands of people snaking through London towards Westminster Hall to say farewell to Britain’s longest-serving monarch.

London’s police force said the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth will be the biggest security operation it has ever undertaken as prime ministers, presidents and royals come together on Monday to pay their respects to Britain’s longest-reigning monarch.

The queen’s funeral is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of people to London’s streets, echoing other important events in Britain’s history, including her coronation in 1953, the funeral of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill in 1965 and the death of Princess Diana in 1997.

The entry to an already miles-long queue to see Queen Elizabeth lying in state in London resumed after a pause on Friday, with the government saying the current wait-time is over 24 hours, in temperatures set to plummet to 7 degrees celsius (45°F).

Elizabeth died in Scotland aged 96 last week, prompting an outpouring of emotion that drew tens of thousands out to see her coffin on its journey to London, and that has now led many more to join the long line to pay their final respects during a four-day lying-in-state ceremony.

Hundreds of foreign royals and leaders are expected to attend the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in London on Monday in one of the biggest diplomatic gatherings in decades.

Westminster Abbey has space for around 2,000 people, so only heads of state and one or two guests have reportedly been invited to Britain’s first state funeral for six decades.

Prince William has told how walking behind his grandmother’s coffin brought back challenging memories, alluding to the death of his mother, as mourners from all walks of life queued for hours on Thursday to file past the late monarch’s coffin.

The new heir to the throne told well-wishers that the military procession had “brought back a few memories”, a nod to the day 25 years ago when, as a boy of 15, he had followed the casket of his mother Princess Diana to her funeral.

British Prime Minister Liz Truss is expected to hold one-to-one talks with U.S. President Joe Biden and other world leaders gathered in London before Queen Elizabeth’s funeral on Monday, The Times reported on Thursday.

LONDON — Mourners wanting to pay their respects to Queen Elizabeth in London may have to queue for up to 7.5 kilometers (4.5 miles), the government said on Tuesday as it set out arrangements for her lying-in-state.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has declared Monday, the day of Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, a federal holiday to mourn the monarch’s death.

“On September 19, Canadians from across the country will pay their respects to Canada’s longest-reigning sovereign, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” Trudeau said in a statement on Tuesday. “For most Canadians, she was the only monarch we ever knew and many of us felt a deep affection and appreciation for her dedication to Canada.”

Just over 5 million people viewed Queen Elizabeth’s final flight on Tuesday, as the journey carrying the late monarch’s body from Edinburgh to London became the most tracked flight in history.

Flight tracking website Flightradar24 said a total of 4.79 million people watched the flight live online, with a further quarter of million people watching on its YouTube channel.

King Charles and members of the royal family received the coffin of the late Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, after tens of thousands of people lined the streets in heavy rain to mark its arrival in the British capital.

On a dark night, the well-lit hearse traveled slowly from a nearby airport through London, with crowds stood all along the route, some in the road, others throwing flowers, and many ditching their cars or running from nearby streets to catch a glimpse of the cortege.

Queen Elizabeth II’s steely only daughter Princess Anne rarely lets her emotions show but the grief has been etched on her face since her mother’s death.

With her elder brother King Charles III called to London, it was left to the queen’s second child to accompany the cortege through Scotland from Balmoral on Sunday.

Dressed in mourning black, she curtseyed as eight kilted soldiers carried the heavy lead-lined casket into the monarch’s official Scottish residence, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, in Edinburgh.

Elizabeth is majestic, hardy and “very fashionable,” said a top Singapore flower curator — referring not to the late monarch, but to an orchid named after the queen when she visited the former British colony.

South Korea’s President Yoon Suk-yeol will visit London, New York and Canada next week in his first trip to those countries, primarily to attend the funeral of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth and visit the U.N. General Assembly, Yoon’s office said on Monday.

Yoon is scheduled to depart on Sept. 18 for London for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth, who died on Thursday at age 96, national security adviser Kim Sung-han told reporters.

Britain’s Prince Harry paid a highly personal tribute on Monday to his “granny,” the late Queen Elizabeth, saying how he cherished the time he had spent with the 96-year-old who died last week and how he would honor his father as the new king.

A key question around Britain’s royal succession was resolved on Sunday when it emerged scandal-hit Prince Andrew and his ex-wife will look after Queen Elizabeth II’s corgi dogs after her death.

The prince and his former spouse Sarah Ferguson will take on Muick and Sandy following the queen’s death at Balmoral on Thursday aged 96, Andrew’s spokesman said.

LONDON – Princes William and Harry and their wives put on a rare united front Saturday to view tributes to Queen Elizabeth II, threatening to upstage their father Charles on the day he was officially proclaimed king.

The impromptu walkabout by William and Kate with Harry and Meghan, their first joint public appearance since March 2020, came as royal officials unveiled plans for the run-up to the queen’s state funeral on September 19.

Doctors are concerned about the health of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth and have recommended the 96-year-old remains under medical supervision, Buckingham Palace said on Thursday, with immediate family traveling to be by her side.

The queen, Britain’s longest reigning sovereign and the world’s oldest monarch, has been suffering from what Buckingham Palace has called “episodic mobility problems” since the end of last year.

She has been forced to cut back on her public engagements since then and on Wednesday canceled a planned virtual meeting with senior ministers after being advised to rest by her doctors.
