MANILA, Philippines--A businessman on Thursday filed charges against two basketball players who he claimed ganged up on him and beat him up during a game at the Araneta Coliseum.
Alain Katigbac, 31, filed a complaint in the Quezon City Prosecutor?s Office for physical injuries against Wynne Arboleda and Mark Yee of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
Arboleda and Yee, players of the Burger King Whoppers, figured in a courtside brawl at the Araneta Coliseum on Oct. 16 allegedly after hearing comments on their manner of playing.
Arboleda was earlier suspended by the PBA for the rest of the season for his attack on Katigbac. He stands to lose P2.73 million in income from his suspension.
In an affidavit filed in the office of Assistant City Prosecutor Rafael Villordon, Katigbac said he went to the game between the Burger King Whoppers and the Smart Gilas RP National Team at 2 p.m. of Oct. 16.
Katigbac said he and his friend, Dan Rey Vitan, who had front row courtside seats, noticed that Arboleda was already being booed by fans because of his ?rough? way of playing against the RP National Team.
The complainant admitted he joined other fans in booing Arboleda?s hard fouls on JV Casio of the opposing team.
Katigbac recalled that after the foul, the cager was ordered to sit on the bench for three minutes, adding that he even cheered for Burger King during the second quarter of the game.
He said Arboleda returned to the game, but again committed fouls against the opposing team, prompting the fans, including himself, to jeer at the player.
Katigbac said he noted that Arboleda hurled invectives at the referee for calling the foul.
?I was deeply shocked and disturbed at Arboleda?s boorish and disrespectful behavior towards an official of the game who was merely doing his duty,? the complainant said.
Suddenly, Arboleda walked towards him, jumped over the partition, then kicked him in the abdomen and punched his head several times, the complainant added.
Katigbac also alleged that Yee hit him with his knees while saying, ?Cheer ka kasi ng cheer eh!?
The complainant later reported the incident to the Cubao police station in Camp Panopio along Edsa, and then proceeded to the East Avenue Medical Center for treatment.
Katigbac said he will also file a separate civil complaint for damages against the two respondents.
