Cagayan spared from Tropical Depression Obet’s onslaught

The center of Tropical Depression Obet has spared the northern portion of Cagayan, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) on Friday.

According to Pagasa’s 11 a.m. weather update, Obet is now 205 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes, with maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour and gustiness of 55 kilometers per hour.

162 residents preemptively evacuated, 11 areas flooded due to Tropical Depression Obet

At least 162 residents have been preemptively evacuated due to Tropical Depression Obet, reported the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) on Friday.

Meanwhile, 11 areas are also flooded, the NDRRMC added.

The preemptive evacuations and the flooded areas are all in Cagayan Valley and there are no reports yet of death or injuries, the NDRRMC said.

Pagasa: Obet nears Northern Luzon; brace for wet, cloudy Friday

The eye of Tropical Depression Obet is forecast to pass over extreme Northern Luzon on Friday afternoon or evening, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in its morning advisory.

The state weather bureau, however, said that due to Obet’s wide radius, parts of Northern Luzon might already experience the tropical depression’s rain and winds by Friday morning.

The weather bureau hoisted Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over the northeastern portion of mainland Cagayan and the island province of Batanes on Thursday due to Tropical Depression Obet, the third weather disturbance to hit the area in over a week.

Residents in Santa Ana and Gonzaga towns in Cagayan were still reeling from severe flooding caused by Tropical Depression Maymay and Typhoon Neneng (international name: Nesat), which hit northern Luzon on Oct. 11 and 12, and Oct. 15 and 16, respectively.

Pagasa: Obet begins to accelerate west southwestward</h2>

Tropical Depression Obet begins to accelerate as it moves west-southwestward before exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) over the weekend, the state meteorologists said on Thursday.

“Tropical Depression Obet is forecast to track west-southwestward until tomorrow morning before turning westward towards Luzon Strait,” the Pagasa said in its 11 p.m. update.

Tropical Depression Obet may exit the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) this coming weekend as it moves southwestward to Luzon Strait, state meteorologists said Thursday.

The center of Obet was last spotted 650 km east of Basco, Batanes, packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center with gustiness of up to 55 kph.

Several local government units (LGUs) suspended classes in selected public and private schools on Thursday, October 20, due to inclement weather and the threat of Tropical Depression Obet.

Despite being outside the Philippine area of responsibility, Typhoon Neneng (international name: Nesat) still prompted cancellation of classes in Cagayan Valley due to its effects and damage, said the Philippine Information Agency Region 2.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) Number 1 was raised over three areas in Northern Luzon on Thursday as Tropical Depression Obet maintained its strength and closer to Philippine landmass, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

In its latest bulletin, Pagasa placed Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and the northeastern portion of mainland Cagayan (Santa Ana and Gonzaga) under TCWS No. 1.
