Signal No. 1 in 3 Northern Luzon areas as Tropical Depression Obet nears

 MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) Number 1 was raised over three areas in Northern Luzon on Thursday as Tropical Depression Obet maintained its strength and closer to Philippine landmass, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

In its latest bulletin, Pagasa placed Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and the northeastern portion of mainland Cagayan (Santa Ana and Gonzaga) under TCWS No. 1.

“Ngayong umaga, nagtaas na tayo ng Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 sa ilang mga lalawigan ng northern Luzon. Particular na dito sa Batanes, Babuyan Islands, at sa northeastern portion ng Cagayan. So sa mga nabanggit kong lugar, asahan natin na within the next 36 hours, mararanasan natin itong mga pagbugso ng mga hangin na dala ni Obet,” said weather specialist Daniel James Villamil in Pagasa’s morning weather forecast.

Tracking Obet

As of 5 a.m., Obet was estimated to be 805 kilometers east of extreme Northern Luzon, moving west-southwest at 15 kilometers per hour (kph) maximum sustained winds of 45 kph and gustiness of up to 55 kph.

Pagasa said that Obet will bring moderate to at times heavy rains to parts of Northern Luzon by Friday and Saturday.

The state weather bureau added that Obet may further intensify into a tropical storm.

Thursday forecast

Meanwhile, Cagayan Valley, the Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos region, Central Luzon, and the northern portion of Quezon, including Polillo Island will experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the shearline on Thursday. 

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.

Warning: Rough seas, flash floods, landslides

Pagasa also warned of rough se conditions off the coasts of Batanes, Babuyan Island, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, and Pangasinan.  

Areas affected by heavy rains or severe thunderstorms are cautioned by Pagasa of possible landslides or flash floods.
