Ombudsman: Don’t prejudge me

MANILA, Philippines?Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez called on the public not to prejudge her in acting on anomalies involving former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. And standing pat on her earlier stance, she said her enemies will not find any ground to impeach her.

In a press conference, Gutierrez said she is willing to personally talk to President Benigno Aquino III to tell him the accomplishments of the Office of the Ombudsman.

?I will also explain to him my side,? Gutierrez said.

?Stop prejudging former Chief Justice Hilario Davide in the investigation of charges against the former president just because he was once appointed (by Arroyo) as United Nations Representative, in the same way that this early, they are prejudging my actions on the findings of the Truth Commission just because I was appointed by the former President,? Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez said her office acts on the basis of evidence.

She also insisted she is only doing her job.

?Tao rin ako nasasaktan. Wala po akong ninakaw sa kaban ng ating bayan. Ewan ko lang po iyong aking mga detractors (I am hurt, too. I didn?t steal from the nation?s coffers, I just don?t know about my detractors),? Gutierrez said.

Doubts have been raised about how Gutierrez will handle the cases filed against Arroyo, being an appointee of the former president and a classmate in law school of First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo.

While there is also no ground for her impeachment, she said she is leaving her fate in the hands of Congress.
