MANILA, Philippines — The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (Caap) on Thursday reminded the public that flying kites and drones within the vicinity of an airport is prohibited to ensure public and airport safety.

The Caap also banned pigeon racing and the use of lasers and any light-emitting devices that can distract or impair a pilot’s vision during a flight.

The agency said that this is in line with a memorandum released last April 15 that said these activities can pose flight and security risks.

“These activities, though often unintentional, present serious threats not only to air travel but also to lives and property on the ground,” Caap Director General Raul del Rosario said in a statement.

“Public safety is at the core of our mission, and we remain committed to preventing accidents before they happen,” Del Rosario added.

The Caap noted that it is closely coordinating with local government units and the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Unit to effectively implement the directive.

The Manila International Airport Authority previously reminded the public that flying drones within the 10-kilometer aerodrome radius of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport can lead to paying substantial fines ranging from P20,000 to P100,000 and imprisonment.
