MANILA, Philippines—Former President Joseph Estrada has chosen November 30, Bonifacio Day, for the filing of his certificate of candidacy at the Commission on Elections to formalize his presidential bid.
Estrada, who was at the inauguration of a track oval at University of Makati Sunday morning, told reporters that he picked the revolutionary hero's day because of its significance.
"Gusto namin may significance, may symbol of the masses... Andres Bonifacio is the hero of the masa. Bayani siya ng masang Pilipino di ba? (We want it to have significance, to be symbolic to the masses…Andres Bonifacio is the hero of the masses. He is the hero of the Filipino mass, isn’t he?)" said the former action star known for his mass appeal.
Before the filing, Estrada will again ride the "Jeep ni Erap" in a program at the Luneta Grandstand, where about 10,000 supporters are expected to join.
Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, Estrada's vice president, will also file his certificate of candidacy on that day.
Estrada was ousted from the presidency by People Power 2 in 2001, convicted for plunder in 2007, but later pardoned by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
