MANILA, Philippines — Police on Tuesday said that launching a rescue operation for kidnapped Irish priest Fr. Michael Sinnott would be the “last option” as the local crisis management committee continues to negotiate for Sinnott’s immediate release.
Philippine National Police Director General Jesus Verzosa said police are now focusing on negotiations to release Sinnott while the local crisis management committee continues to establish contact with Sinnott’s abductors.
“We will start with negotiations because the primary importance is the safety of the victim,” Verzosa said.
The 79-year-old priest was abducted in Pagadian City.
A video footage was recently released showing Sinnott. His abductors are demanding $2 million for his release.
However, authorities said it was standing firm on the existing no-ransom policy.
