As groom’s father, bride’s mother thought to have eloped, couple pushes through with wedding

A bride and groom in India who were set to be married have been in distress after their parents disappeared just weeks before their wedding.

The groom’s father and the bride’s mother, who are both in their 40s, are suspected of having eloped after going missing at the same time in the state of Gujarat, the Times of India reported on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Despite the awkward situation, the groom’s family has decided to go through with the ceremony, The Indian Express reported yesterday, Jan. 23.

“We don’t want to cancel the marriage as invitation cards have been distributed and all preparations are done,” a relative of the groom said.

Each of their families has filed missing persons reports after they went missing on Jan. 10. It turns out that the two missing persons in question have been neighbors and friends since childhood. A relative said that according to close friends, they had a past romance.

In their younger years, the groom’s father was poor, while the bride’s mother came from a wealthy family. When they had an affair together, the latter’s family disapproved of the man, The Indian Express reported yesterday. Both would go on to marry someone else and have kids of their own.

After their kids grew older, the groom’s father, a textile businessman, extended a proposal for his son to marry his past lover’s daughter. The marriage was agreed upon by each family. The groom’s dad and bride’s mom saw each other regularly before the wedding while the families spent time together, which may have rekindled their romance.

It is believed that the bride’s mother met her estranged lover on Jan. 10 and that they took off on a bus together. There has been no contact with them as both their mobile phones are off, as per local police. Police have tapped a mobile service provider to help locate them.  Niña V. Guno /ra
