UP’s 22nd president is ex-regent Angelo Jimenez
MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines’ 22nd president is former regent and lawyer Angelo Jimenez, the UP Media and Public Relations Office (MPRO) said.
The UP Board of Regents (BOR) held their deliberations earlier Friday and Jimenez was selected over five other nominees, namely, Patrick Alain Azanza, Salvador Belaro, Jr., Benito Pacheco, Fernando Sanchez Jr. and Fidel Nemenzo, who had been endorsed by groups such as UP Diliman’s student government and publication, as well as different national artists, scientists, and academics.
“Atty. Jimenez will serve as the University’s 22nd President, succeeding the current UP President, Professor Danilo L. Concepcion, whose term will end in February 2023. Jimenez will serve a six-year term from February 2023 to February 2029,” the MPRO announced.
According to a required paper that Jimenez submitted to the BOR for consideration, one of his visions is to transform UP into a “global university” as he plans to focus on graduate and post-graduate programs and academic connections.
Based on his curriculum vitae, Jimenez is currently employed at Of Counsel, Jaromay Laurente and Associates, as he is a consultant of the Office of Representative Pablo John F. Garcia (Cebu, 3rd District). He was a lecturer at the UP Law Center Institute for the Administration of Justice Mandatory Continuing Legal Education from 2016-2021.
