Nat’l artists, scientists, profs back Nemenzo as next UP president

Three national artists, three national scientists, a former University of the Philippines (UP) president, former chancellors of UP Baguio and UP Visayas, and over 40 UP professors emeriti have expressed their support for the candidacy of Dr. Fidel Nemenzo for the UP presidency.

“It is our most informed and judicious view that, among the current aspirants for UP president, only UP Diliman chancellor Fidel R. Nemenzo fulfills all of our criteria for an ideal and exemplary academic leader,” they said in a statement.

They are considered among the most esteemed and accomplished members of the country’s academic, artistic and scientific communities, representing various disciplines and the different UP campuses, namely Baguio, Cebu, Diliman, Los Baños, Manila and the Visayas. The collective statement, which had 57 signatories as of this writing, was issued Wednesday night through the Facebook page “Fidel Nemenzo is our UP President.”

Nemenzo rose from ranks in UP, from instructor to professor, and became chancellor in March 2020.

The UP Board of Regents, the university’s highest policymaking body, will vote on the next UP president on Dec. 9.

The other nominees for the position are Patrick Alain Azanza, Salvador Belaro, Jr., Angelo Jimenez, Benito Pacheco and Fernando Sanchez Jr.
