Coast Guard to have 24,500 men by end of 2022
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is expected to have 24,500 personnel by year-end when new recruits complete their training, PCG commandant Adm. Artemio Abu said during the agency’s 121st anniversary on Wednesday.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. served as the guest of honor at the event held at Port Area in Manila, where he acknowledged the agency’s role in being on the front line in defending the country’s maritime territory and other law enforcement duties.
The PCG only had 8,500 members in 2016, but it conducted its biggest single enlistment in September and recruited 1,500 draftees. The enlistment boosts the agency’s aim to have 35,000 personnel to have enough manpower in addressing maritime challenges and increasing assets.
The PCG has expanded its presence through 15 PCG regional districts, 89 stations, and more than 400 substations nationwide, Abu said.
He also cited the PCG’s recent efforts and accomplishments in maritime security, search and rescue, law enforcement, and environmental protection. Part of it includes increased patrols in the West Philippine Sea and the installation of sovereign markers or buoys near four islands and reefs in the Kalayaan Islands in May.
