Bongbong Marcos backs PCG’s modernization efforts
MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Wednesday vowed that his administration will support the modernization efforts of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) as the agency marked its 121st anniversary.
In his speech, Marcos commended the PCG for its service to the country, which he said has continuously changed over the years.
He lauded the agency for “bravely” performing maritime search and rescue operations, enforcing maritime law, safety and security and for protecting the marine environment.
“Throughout your century-old narrative, you have never failed to heed the call of your fellow Filipinos, always in their time of need,” Marcos said.
Article continues after this advertisement“The PCG in the recent past has taken on many new duties, critical of that is now you are the frontline in the defense of our maritime territory, economic zones, of our baselines,” he added.
Article continues after this advertisementHe also touted how the agency “rose to the challenge” and served the Filipino people during the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As your leader I assure you that this administration will always be behind you, supportive of your efforts and initiatives to modernize the PCG which will redound to better delivery of service to the nation,” the President said.
He then urged the PCG personnel to continue its “dedication and persistence” in their duties and responsibilities, especially as the Philippines faces the uncertain post-pandemic world.
For his part, PCG Commandant Admiral Artemio Abu stressed on the agency’s “serious commitment” in promoting maritime safety, following the President’s earlier pronouncement that not a square inch of Philippine territory will be abandoned to another nation.
“Rest assured that the Philippine Coast Guard is committed to the country’s position in ensuring territorial integrity,” he said during his speech in the same event.
