MANILA, Philippines — A low-pressure area (LPA) will bring moderate to heavy rains over Kalayaan Islands within the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Thursday.

Based on the 11 a.m. weather advisory of Pagasa, the LPA was last spotted 265 kilometers southeast of Pag-asa Island in Kalayaan, Palawan. Pagasa said the LPA is still less likely to develop into a tropical depression.

“Meanwhile, the Shear Line is affecting the eastern section of Northern Luzon. In the next 24 hours, the LPA will bring moderate to heavy rains over Kalayaan Islands and the Shear Line will bring light to moderate with at times heavy rains over Cagayan,” Pagasa said in its advisory.

“Under these conditions, scattered flooding and rain-induced landslides are likely, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps and in areas with significant antecedent rainfall,” it added.

Pagasa advised concerned Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices “to take all necessary measures to protect life and property.”

Pagasa said its Regional Services Divisions might also issue local heavy rainfall warnings, rainfall or thunderstorm advisories, and other severe weather information.

The LPA is expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility on Thursday or Friday, according to the state weather bureau.
