MANILA, Philippines — As Typhoon “Odette” continues to wreak havoc in Visayas, a power utility company based in Cebu announced a power outage in the majority of the region due to the typhoon’s strong winds.
Visayan Electric Company, Inc. or Veco said in a statement on Facebook that “95 percent of our franchise area are interrupted due to strong winds.”
“We have suspended our line restoration and survey works since the weather has worsened and it will be unsafe for everyone,” it added.
Veco is the second largest electric utility in the Philippines and mainly provides electricity in Cebu, specifically the cities of Cebu, Mandaue, Talisay and Naga, as well as the municipalities Liloan, Consolacion, Minglanilla and San Fernando.
Veco then told the public that it will not be restoring power until the storm has passed.
Based on the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration’s (Pagasa) latest storm advisory, the southern portion of Cebu is still currently under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 3, while the rest of Cebu including the Camotes and Bantayan Islands are under Signal No. 2.
Pagasa said Odette was last located within the vicinity of Ilog, Negros Occidental, as of 1:00 a.m.
