Solons commit to end cyberbullying
MANILA, Philippines — Some legislators from the House of Representatives have committed to collaborate in providing short and long-term solutions to cyberbullying as mental health issues hound young Filipinos.
San Jose del Monte City Rep. Florida Robes, Pangasinan 3rd District Rep. Rose Marie Arenas, and Zamboanga Sibugay 2nd District Rep. Ann Hofer, among others, signed Wednesday a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Sunfull Foundation to kickstart a campaign on responsible social media use to combat online attacks and harassment.
“We need to take action to protect the youth from cyberbullying and other online threats,” Robes said in a statement Thursday. “Ultimately, our mission is to save lives and empower them as discerning internet users.”
According to the lawmaker, studies have shown that the Philippines has one of the highest cases of depression in Southeast Asia. Reports also say that at least 3.3 million Filipinos suffer from depression, she added.
“It’s really a serious health condition. We cannot afford to take chances with it,” Robes said.
In a privilege speech delivered at the House plenary on Aug. 27, the lone district congresswoman said the chamber should investigate the crafting of senior high school curriculum in view of the mental health issues affecting the youth.
