Ateneo opens independent probe, seeks ‘absolute truth’ in fatal drowning

MANILA, Philippines — The Ateneo de Manila University’s Board of Trustees ordered an independent fact-finding investigation to ensure an impartial, thorough and careful review of the circumstances surrounding the deaths of student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Chukwuemeka Divine Adili.

“This inquiry will exhaustively examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, reconstruct a transparent timeline, review all athletic protocols, and interview every individual present,” the Ateneo said in a statement on Thursday.

Once completed, the findings will be submitted directly to the Board of Trustees for immediate and appropriate action, in accordance with legal requirements, due process, and the University’s duty to the affected families.

Ateneo also said Blue Eagles head coach Thomas Anthony “Tab” Baldwin and team manager Christopher “Epok” Quimpo have “gone on leave for the duration of the inquiry.”

According to Ateneo, this is “to preserve the total integrity, independence, and fairness of this investigation—and to ensure all participants can cooperate freely without any actual or perceived pressure.”

“In our commitment to honor the memory of Bobet and Divine, the University must seek the absolute truth,” said the Ateneo statement.

The University also said that it is fully, openly, and unconditionally cooperating with all ongoing investigations by national authorities and relevant regulatory agencies. Multiple agencies, including the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the Philippine National Police–Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG), are currently carrying out separate probes into the incident.

According to accounts from those present, the team was conducting a conditioning drill in knee-deep water near the shoreline when they were unexpectedly hit by large waves and a strong rip current. 

Most of the players were able to return safely, but Baterbonia and Adili were swept away by the current. 

“We state categorically, to protect the dignity of our fallen players, that no weights of any kind were used during this exercise,” said the Ateneo statement.

The University said it extends its deep solidarity and prayers to their families, teammates, and all who were impacted by the passing of Baterbonia and Adili.

“No words can heal the void left by this tragedy, and our immediate, absolute priority remains enveloping their grieving families with the material, emotional, and pastoral support they need during this time of unimaginable pain,” they said.
