Doctor who said ‘women deserve to be raped’ suspended from hospital
A doctor in Victoria, Australia has been suspended after he posted sexist and racist remarks online.
Dr. Christopher Kwan Chen Lee drew criticism after he posted in Singaporean chat rooms that some women deserve to be raped, as per the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on April 24. In another post seemingly addressing a woman, he said she “needs to be abandoned in India and repeatedly raped.”
The 31-year-old doctor made the comments back in December 2016 when he was working and residing in Hobart City. Lee apparently only started working at Victoria’s Box Hill Hospital just last January.
The Tasmanian Health Practitioners Tribunal has since found Lee guilty of professional misconduct on April 17 and shall be suspended for six weeks, as per report.
Lee, in his defense, told the tribunal he was “relatively young and inexperienced” when he made the offensive remarks in the past. He also added he had a “brash and opinionated bent” when it came to his conduct online.
Tribunal chairman Robert Webster, however, maintained that Lee’s comments were “disrespectful of women,” “racially discriminatory,” and had “potential to cause harm to the public.”
Apart from his disparaging comments toward women, Lee also made an insensitive post about the deadly tsunami that hit Indonesia last September 2018. As per The Guardian on April 29, Lee called on to people not to offer help to Indonesia following the tragedy and described the Southeast Asian country as a “nation of ingrates.” Cody Cepeda/JB
