MANILA, Philippines – The attempt of a travel agency messenger to dupe his Korean employer of some $90,000 by filing a false robbery police report backfired on him when his employer had him arrested for qualified theft in Manila.
Marlon Ramos (not the Inquirer reporter), 26, of Ligid Tipas, Taguig City, was nabbed by operatives of the Manila Police District (MPD) Malate police station 9 on the complaint lodged by Hyun Chui Kim, 34, owner of the Hyun Travel Agency at Unit 1704 Antel Seaview Tower along 2626 Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City.
Based on the Korean’s complaint, he had instructed Ramos on Monday to withdraw $90,000 (P4,355,580) from a bank in Makati City and promptly return at the travel agency.
However Ramos, after withdrawing the sum from the bank, proceeded to the MPD station 9 and claimed that he was robbed somewhere along the stretch of Leon Guinto Street in Malate at around 4:15 p.m. Monday, by four men.
But when investigators of the Malate police station responded to the site of the alleged robbery, they reportedly discovered that no such incident happened.
MPD station 9 commander Supt. Ferdinand Quirante, upon the discovery of the false report, ordered his men to detain Ramos who allegedly admitted that he had made up the robbery story.
Follow-up operations conducted by Quirante’s men resulted in the recovery of $70,000 from Ramos’ home. There was no trace of the remaining $20,000.
Two other suspected accomplices, identified only by the aliases “Peter” and “Amboy,” are now the subject of a police manhunt.
