PNP braces for protests as Senate starts Sara Duterte impeachment trial

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) is on alert for possible protests as the Senate convenes as an impeachment court for the trial of Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday, May 18.

“We expect high emotions from the supporters and this is the part when police presence is needed to maintain peace and order,” PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said in a statement.

“The Philippine National Police… [has] placed Metro Manila and key regional units on alert ahead of possible protest actions and other activities linked to the opening of Senate impeachment court proceedings,” he noted.

Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano previously confirmed the chamber would convene as an impeachment court on Monday, nearly a week after it had received the articles of impeachment against Duterte.

The vice president is accused of misusing confidential funds, amassing alleged unexplained wealth, bribing Department of Education officials and threatening President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his family.

Tensions have surrounded the Senate since last week, when Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa resurfaced after a six-month-long absence then “escaped” after a shooting incident at the premises amid his looming arrest at the hands of the International Criminal Court.

Dela Rosa, a long-time Duterte family ally, is wanted by the global tribunal for crimes against humanity charges in connection with former President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs.

Given these developments, Nartatez said the police anticipated demonstrations in parts of Metro Manila and Davao City.

“We fully understand the sentiments of everybody on this matter, but please don’t treat your PNP as your enemy,” the top cop stressed.

“We appeal to those who are planning to hold rallies to conduct their activities in a peaceful and orderly manner to avoid issues,” he added. /jpv
