AFP forms new intel unit to address security woes

MANILA, Philippines — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has created a new intelligence unit “in response to evolving security challenges,” its spokesperson, Col. Francel Margareth Padilla, said on Wednesday.

The AFP Intelligence Command, which was activated on Aug. 21, is headed by Lt. Gen. Ferdinand Barandon.

“This renewed establishment addresses the pressing need for a more adaptive and efficient intelligence,” Padilla said in a statement.

“We are focused on enhancing coordination across all intelligence units to ensure a unified approach to emerging threats,” she added.

Padilla declined to elaborate on how the new intelligence unit would differ from the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, which conducts intelligence operations for the military.

“I prefer not to respond in detail at this time,” she said. In January this year, the military also reactivated the AFP Counterintelligence Group. —Nestor Corrales
