MANILA, Philippines — The opening of classes for School Year 2025-2026 on Monday is smooth sailing as of now, according to Education Secretary Sonny Angara.

He said this after conducting a quick inspection at Epifanio delos Santos Elementary School in Manila.

“There’s none, so far. It’s okay and smooth,” he told reporters when asked what problems the teachers have encountered so far on the first day of classes.

However, Angara said the “worst” dilemma they are looking at is the fire that engulfed an old building of San Francisco High School in Barangay Santo Cristo, Quezon City, on Sunday.

He said the Department of Education is seeking ways to assist the school and its learners.

The current school year will run through March 31, 2026, with a total of 197 class days.

Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police deployed 37,000 officers at 45,974 public and private schools to maintain peace and order for the opening of classes. /apl/abc
