Armed Forces chief cites military role in rescue operations
ARMED Forces Chief of Staff Gen. Eduardo Oban Jr. dropped by the Central Command yesterday to greet and announce benefits for the troops stationed in Central Visayas.
Oban, who was introduced by Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin, cited the Centcom’s role in implementing the Internal Peace and Security Program (IPSP) or Oplan Bayanihan which expanded the military’s role in disaster relief and rescue operations.
Oban and Gazmin credited the program with facilitating the rescue of Cebu City Engineer Virgilio Fernandez from the Abu Sayyaf bandit group in Basilan province.
“Because of their relentless pursuit, they neglected Fernandez, who escaped,” Oban said.
The Armed Forces chief said they will step up their surveillance of the Abu Sayyaff aand other terrorist groups.
Oban said the military’s role in rescue operations will help revive public confidence in them in the wake of reports about corruption by former top officials. Correspondent Edison delos Angeles
