MANILA, Philippines — Beware of private vehicle drivers pretending to be working for transportation network vehicle service (TNVS) companies, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) warned the public in a statement issued on Wednesday.

“The LTFRB received reports coming from social media networks about a vehicle allegedly offering TNVS services among commuters but in a forcible manner and charged a much higher fare,” the LTFRB said.

According to the LTFRB, a driver of the vehicle was seen by some netizens operating around a mall in Quezon City, allegedly offering TNVS rides.

On Monday, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) said it released a show cause order for an owner of a vehicle who must make an appearance at the agency by Jan. 31 to give an explanation.

It was not clear, however, whether the LTFRB and the LTO were referring to the same vehicle owner.

LTFRB Chairman Teofilo Guadiz III said that, while looking for extra income was understandable, there was a right way to do it.

“If indeed they are doing it, they should stop immediately. It affects the business of legitimate ride-hailing apps and more importantly the commuting public,” Guadiz said.  “For those who want to offer TNVS services and earn extra money, they should apply for a franchise.”
