No tsunami threat in PH after 6.6 magnitude quake in Davao Oriental

MANILA, Philippines — There is no tsunami threat in the country after a 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck Davao Oriental on Thursday, state seismologists said.

In an advisory, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs)  said that there was no “destructive threat” of a tsunami after the tremor.

“A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 occurred Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental on 04 June 2020 at 04:50 PM (Philippine Standard Time) located at 05.55 ºN, 127.17 ºE with a depth of 134 km. No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data,” the advisory read.

This comes after a 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck the waters off Governor Generoso in Davao Oriental at 4:50 p.m. on Thursday.

Phivolcs said that the earthquake was felt in other areas.
