MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday urged government officials in his hometown in Davao City to establish a “strong opposition” to challenge his children’s current leadership.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of his children, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio and Vice Mayor Sebastian Duterte, the President issued the remark as he again addressed the “political dynasty” tag on his family, whose members now hold key local posts in Davao.

“People keep on repeating that phrase about dynasty,” the Chief Executive said. “Totoo man’ yan, masama naman talaga na isang pamilya lang for so many years (It’s true, it’s not good for one family to rule for so many years)….Maybe after this, if my daughter Inday would decide, let us give others a chance. Kasi kung ang Duterte pa rin ang magtakbo, I’m sure, huwag lang siraan ang pangalan, mananalo pa rin ‘yan  (Because a Duterte would still run, I’m sure he or she will still win).”

“But if you think (that) Davaoeños are not already up to it, then by all means I suggest all their leaders put up a strong opposition so that the people will have a choice. Hindi lang Duterte ang marunong,” he added.

Before assuming the presidency in 2016, Duterte served as long-time Davao City Mayor. Meanwhile, all his children with his first wife Elizabeth Zimmerman prevailed in the recently concluded midterm elections.
