Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Roy Cimatu has ordered the creation of satellite environment offices in the country’s tourist spots such as Boracay, to monitor their management.

During the House Committee on Natural Resources hearing on the reported establishment of structures in Boracay on Wednesday, Cimatu revealed that the environment office in the island resort was abolished prior to his tenure.

Cimatu said the DENR has restored the office and will create other DENR extension offices in the other eco-tourism areas.

“Not only in Boracay, I will be creating DENR offices right in the heart of all tourist destinations in the country like Siargao in Surigao, Panglao in Bohol, in Palawan and also in Puerto Galera,” he added.

However, some committee members have expressed concern that the DENR’s budget would not be sufficient to realize Cimatu’s plan.

“Mr. Secretary, P150 million compared to the P50 billion is not sufficient.  I think you should use your influence to the executive, to the president, and to this congress, to ask for more,” said Rep. Jesulito Manalo, committee chair.

“We cannot use P150 million, ‘yong building niyo lang magkano na eh.  ‘Yong operations ninyo,” he added.
