Who would kill an ‘amiable’ man like Marasigan? Biz journos cry for justice

A group of business journalists condemned on Friday the “senseless killing” of former newsman Michael Marasigan and urged authorities to swiftly investigate the incident.

“We urge the police and other relevant authorities to leave no stones unturned and follow all the leads even if they end up on the doorsteps of the powerful and mighty,” Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines (EJAP) said in a statement.

“Justice for Mike is what we demand because that is what he truly deserves,” EJAP added.

Marasigan, 60, was gunned down together with his businessman brother, Christopher, by motorcycle-riding assassins in San Juan City early evening on Thursday.

Marasigan was a former editor of BusinessWorld and an independent video producer at Living Asia Channel. After leaving journalism, he went on to pursue career in public relations, where he became a well-known communications consultant. His clients include the Department of Finance.

Marasigan’s colleagues described him as an “amiable and kind-hearted man” so it was a puzzle to them why he was “violently” killed.

“Their violent murders aren’t just signs of the times but an indictment of the security situation in the country,” EJAP said.

“If a person who has left his comfort zone to help the government through non-controversial work with the [DOF] could be killed so brazenly, how could anyone feel safe?”
