Cop hurt, 1 dead in firefight with Albay gang
LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines—A cop was wounded while a still unidentified person died in a firefight between members of an organized crime group and authorities in Libon town in Albay province Monday night.
Chief Inspector Arthur Gomez, information officer of Albay police, said about 30 policemen were about to serve a warrant of arrest against Gilbert Concepcion and his group at the residence of a certain Ogie Lisaba when they were fired at by residents at the said area.
“There’s an occasion in the area where the firefight happened. Our policemen just alighted (from police cars) when those having a drinking spree opened fire at them,” he said.
Police Officer 2 Manolo Nierva of 5th Regional Public Safety Battalion sustained a gunshot wound on his right hand from the four-minute gunfight, Gomez said.
Concepcion is considered as the leader of the number one notorious organized crime group in the Bicol region with more or less seven murder cases, including the death of Makati engineer Nelson Morales./rga
