2 soldiers wounded in clash with NPA rebels
TAGUM CITY – At least two soldiers were wounded during a clash between government troops and suspected New People’s Army rebels in Monkayo, Compostela Valley on Thursday, police reported on Friday.
The incident happened as troops from Alpha Company of the army’s 25th Infantry Battalion were conducting combat patrol at a hinterland community in Baylo village past 1 p.m., said Chief Insp. Andrea dela Cerna, Southern Mindanao police regional spokesperson.
Dela Cerna said the soldiers were fired upon by armed men believed to be NPA guerrillas, sparking a 15-minute clash.
Private First Class Neoborn Nabasca and Corporal John Patrick Madariaga were wounded in the fighting, and the rebels suffered an undetermined number of casualties.
The wounded soldiers were airlifted to the regional military hospital in Davao City, she said.
The regional police spokesperson said pursuit operations have been launched by the army, as elements of Monkayo police station mounted checkpoints in support of the military. CDG/rga
