‘Surrenderer’ shot dead in Quezon
LUCENA CITY, Philippines—A recent “surrendereer” in the police anti-drug campaign in Sariaya town in Quezon province was shot dead by an unknown assailant, police said Friday.
Supt. Alex Dimaculangan, Sariaya police chief, said the victim Manuel Alvarez, 43, was on board a bicycle in Barangay (village) Mangalang Uno when the gunman appeared from behind and shot him repeatedly around 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
The victim died on the spot from wounds in different parts of the body. The killer casually walked away after the shooting, police said.
Police investigators recovered seven pieces of fired cartridge cases from a still unknown caliber.
Dimaculangan said the victim turned himself in to the local police station last Monday.
“He confessed that he is just a drug user. But we’re still validating it because in most cases, self-confessed users often turned out as pushers,” he said. RAM/rga
