Faces of a convict: Napoles spaced out, smiling a day after getting life sentence

Accused pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles showed two faces a day after she was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the serious illegal detention of principal whistleblower Benhur Luy.

Napoles was convicted Tuesday of detaining Luy for three months on suspicions that Luy, her entrusted financial officer, was making his own “pork” scam with lawmakers.

Inside the Sandiganbayan court where she faces bail proceedings for plunder over the alleged pork barrel scam, Napoles looked spaced out and quiet, even sleepy, with her eyes glazed as she listened to her former employee Merlina Suñas testify against her.

Napoles also looked more subdued, compared to her attitude in previous hearings of making faces and laughing while witnesses testified.

Outside, however, having come from a comfort room break, Napoles smiled to reporters who tried to talk to her.

She hid herself in her wall of jail guards. When cameramen tried to pursue her, she ran toward the courtroom doors smirking.

Napoles also looked decent wearing makeup and polo on Wednesday’s hearing, compared to her previous look when she just wore a scratchy jacket and without any makeup to her face.

After the hearing, Napoles told reporters she had a comfortable sleep last night and that her conscience is clear.

“Malinis ang konsyensya ko,” the smiling convict said while drawing a heart to her chest.

When pressed by reporters for an interview, she said: “Nasentensyahan na nga, interview pa?”

During the hearing, Napoles also managed to make faces to this reporter, who mouthed out that Napoles looked more decent with makeup.

The convict then whispered: “Not guilty. Importante ang puso (What’s important is the heart).”

She added, “May karma (there is karma),” while pointing to her made-up face. IDL
