‘Amang’ to bring light rains during papal visit

MANILA, Philippines–Tropical Storm “Amang” (international name Mekkhala) will bring light to moderate rains in Leyte on Saturday, when Pope Francis is expected to arrive in the province, the state weather bureau said.

“By Saturday (January 17), light to moderate rains and moderate to strong winds will prevail due to TS Amang,” the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said in its special weather outlook on Thursday.

Amang, however, is expected to weaken as it approaches the eastern seaboard of Samar.

Pope Francis is set to spend a day in Leyte with survivors of Supertyphoon “Yolanda” on Saturday.

In Metro Manila, it will be generally good weather with passing light rains and light to moderate northeasterly winds from Thursday to Saturday (January 15 to 17).

On Sunday (January 18), when Pope Francis is scheduled to appear at University of Santo Tomas and Luneta Park, light rains and light to moderate winds will prevail over Metro Manila as Amang moves closer toward the eastern section of Southern Luzon.

By Monday (January 19), when the pope departs, cloudy skies, light rains and moderate winds will prevail over Metro Manila.
