35,000 animals near Mayon Volcano evacuated

MANILA, Philippines—In anticipation of the impending eruption, the Albay government evacuated livestock and pets from the six-kilometer danger zone of Mayon Volcano on Saturday, a radio report said.

The evacuation of the animals would prevent residents from returning to the danger zone, the report said.

The report said some 35,000 animals were evacuated from the danger zone near the restive Mayon.

It added that the Albay government would spend P3 per head or P105, 897 per day for the evacuated animals.

According to the 8 a.m. bulletin of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), 22 volcanic earthquakes and 70 rockfall events were recorded during the past 24 hours.

On Tuesday, Albay governor Joey Salceda declared the province under a state of calamity.
