Raul Goco burial set for Thursday

MANILA, Philippines – Former Solicitor General and Philippine Ambassador Raul Goco will be buried on Thursday, Aug. 21, at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina City.

Goco passed away early Saturday from complications after a surgery for aneurysm. He was 84.

He was born in Manila and completed his high school, pre-law and bachelors of law degree at the Ateneo de Manila University. He was admitted to the Philippine Bar in 1955 and New York Bar in 1997, the website of the Office of Solicitor General said.

Goco took graduate studies at Far Eastern University in Manila and Special Studies at the Academy of American and International Law in Dallas, Texas and at the same time was a government scholar to the United States.

He practiced private law before joining the Department of Justice from 1957 to 1961. He then served as a solicitor from 1961 to 1971. He was later elected governor of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines and worked for the IBP’s admission into the Law Association for Asia and the Pacific (LawAsia) in 1973. He was the first Filipino to be elected as president of the LawAsia in 1983.

He served as Solicitor General from 1992 to 1996 during the time of then President Fidel Ramos. He was later appointed as Philippine Ambassador to Canada.

Goco’s remains lie in state at the Mt. Carmel Parish in New Manila, Quezon City.
