MANILA, Philippines—A retired policeman, who reportedly worked for the late Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo when he was still the mayor of Naga City and during Robredo’s term as Cabinet secretary at the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), was shot dead by unidentified men at his own residence in Makati City on Saturday night.

Retired Senior Police Officer 3 Dionisio “Dennis” Tan, 56, was shot at close range several times at around 7 p.m. in his residence at No. 1888 Orense St. corner Nuestra Señora del Carmen Street. Barangay (village) Guadalupe Nuevo, a Makati police report said.

The incident report signed by Police Chief Inspector Gaylord Tamayo revealed that while the victim was walking toward his house after alighting from his car, a man armed with a .45 gun approached him and fired consecutive gunshots.

Tan was declared dead on arrival at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City due to gunshot wounds on his chest and chin. Witnesses told the police that the assailant who was about 5-foot tall with dark complexion and who was sporting a baseball cap and a black jacket fled on foot toward Edsa after the shooting.

The police are still investigating the motive behind the killing but have revealed that they are looking into the possibility that the retired police officer’s death was linked to his service or to the security and detective agency he was currently running.

One of Tan’s househelps, who refused to be identified, told the police that she constantly heard her boss arguing with someone over the phone days before he was killed. The victim’s employee also said that the arguments usually led to cursing and swearing.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer also learned from his employees that Tan last served as a police officer in Naga City, but was tapped by Robredo when he was assigned at the DILG. He opted for early retirement three years ago and just focused on running his security agency.
