MANILA, Philippines—Ramon Bautista may be a famous pop culture personality, but his brand of humor does not sit well with Davao City’s powerful Duterte family.

The comedian, in a rave party during the celebration of the Kadayawan Festival on Saturday, remarked, “Ang daming hipon dito sa Davao,” and led the people in chanting “hipon.”

“Hipon” or shrimp is a colloquial term for a person who is only attractive from the neck down.

Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte, who was present during the party, reprimanded Bautista later that night.

This prompted Bautista to go back on stage and apologize.

“I’m here in front of you to say my apologies because sinabi ko maraming hipon dito. Nahihiya po ako sa inyo kasi you welcomed me here in your beautiful city,” Bautista said.

(I’m here in front of you to say my apologies because I said that many of you looked like shrimps. I am embarrassed because you welcomed mere here in your beautiful city.)

The crowd reportedly had mixed reactions to his apology.

Former Davao City mayor Sara Duterte took to her Facebook account to express her annoyance for Bautista.

“Attended this Kadayawan Invasion and heard this (Ramon Bautista) guy say “hipon” ang mga babae sa Davao,” Duterte said.

She also urged city councilors on her Facebook friends list to ban Bautista in the city.

“Many councilors are my fb (Facebook) friends… If you do not call out this guy persona non grata, [you’re] doing a disservice to women all over!! P at F to you Ramon Bautista! Bisita ka lang, gumalang ka! (You are just a visitor, learn how to respect!)” Duterte said in her post.
