MANILA, Philippines—Senator Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV is not yet about to take a colleague’s challenge to file an impeachment complaint against Vice President Jejomar Binay but did not also rule it out.
“We’ll get there, we’ll get there,” Trillanes told reporters on Wednesday when asked about Senator Nancy Binay’s challenge to file an impeachment case against her father instead of initiating an investigation in the Senate on the alleged “overpriced” carpark building in Makati City.
“Let’s deal with the investigation first. Once evidence will show that there was indeed some anomalies committed by Vice President Binay, then we will use that same evidence as a basis for his impeachment. But let’s not divert the issue. Let’s deal with the hearing first,” he said.
Trillanes said the chairman of the committee that will investigate the issue against the Vice President and his son, Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay, may come up with a report or recommendation which could be used as a basis to file the impeachment complaint against the Vice President.
He also brushed aside Senator Binay’s remarks that her father would not stoop down to his level.
Reacting to his colleague, Trillanes said: “Wala naman tayong sinasbai na ka-level nati sya (Vice President). Masyado na s’yang mataas, hindi natin abot yun.”
(I did not say that we were on the same level. He is already up there, I cannot reach that.)
“We just focus on the investigation first. Let’s see. We’ll try to be as objective as possible in presenting evidence,” he added.
It was Trillanes who initiated an investigation against the Binays. The probe by the sub-committee created by the blue ribbon is scheduled next week.
