MANILA, Philippines-The Philippines will experience the longest day of 2014 Saturday, an event known as the summer solstice, the state weather bureau said.

“Philippine nights are at their shortest and daytimes are at their longest around the summer solstice,” Vicente Malano of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in an advisory.

Malano said the daytime would last for 12 hours, 59 minutes and 36 seconds and the sunset is expected at 6:51 p.m.

He said the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun at its maximum extent during this event.

The summer solstice indicates the beginning of summer in some parts of the world while it signals rainy season here in the Philippines.

Pagasa, however, said the longest day is not necessarily the hottest.

In its weather advisory, Pagasa said Metro Manila, MIMAROPA, Ilocos region and the provinces of Cavite, Batangas, Bataan and Zambales would  experience occasional rains.

Mindanao will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms while  the rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.
