MANILA, Philippines – In a bid to clear the water ways of Metro Manila, Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas said he wants to relocate at least 8,000 informal-settler families from danger zones by the end of the year.
As of now, at least 4,000 families have been relocated, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) secretary said during the “Flood Summit” held at the House of Representatives on Thursday.
The DILG plans to relocate 40,000 families who live close to the waterways in order for the Department of Public Works and Highways to build a revetment wall that would prevent soil erosion in the river banks, Roxas said.
The Cabinet official added that they plan to give an annual P18,000 to each family as a rental temporary relocation fund.
As part of DILG’s “Flood Resilience Program for Informal Settler Families,” at least 19,440 families need to be relocated this year from eight priority waterways that would be cleared to mitigate flooding in the metropolis.
