1 dead, 4 hurt in Camarines Sur blast

NAGA CITY, Philippines-–A drinking session among friends ended abruptly in an explosion that killed one of them and injured four others in the town of Bato early Tuesday, police said.

Police Officer 3 Marnelle Intia, spokesperson of police in the municipality of Bato, said Efren Bagasala, Jr., 24, died on the spot when an explosive, believed to be an M203 grenade, exploded in front of him while he was having drinks with four companions in front of his house by the national highway in Barangay (village) Santiago at 12:15 a.m.

Intia said Bagasala’s companions—Elisa Sabirola, Ronnel Rumaraog, John Paul Paran and Christian Magalona— were taken to the Rinconada Medical Center in Iriga City, more than eight kilometers away, for treatment.

Police were investigating if the explosive belonged to Bagasala, who was said to be a member of the paramilitary Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit in Bato.
