11-yr-old boy drowns off Mandaue

AN 11-year-old boy drowned in the waters off barangay Labogon, Mandaue Ciy on Thursday afternoon.

John Lee Rey Gelig was swimming with two other boys when the accident happened.

Police said the boy’s parents were convinced that what happened was an accident. They declined to have the boy’s body subjected to autopsy.

Police said the boy came from school then went to his stepfather’s house for lunch.

Police said John’s stepfather was asleep when he left and went to sitio Buldozeran.

The boy then went with his friends for a swim near the Cansaga Bay Bridge where the water level is deep since cargo ships pass in the area, PO2 Richard Ares of Basak police station said.

The place was about 400 meters from the boy’s house.

Police said John’s companions sought help from residents in the area when the victim disappeared.

The boy’s stepfather rushed to the area when he was informed about the incident. The boy’s body was found floating past 5 p.m./REPORTER JUCELL MARIE P. CUYOS
