SM City Cebu will offer a free public viewing of the multi-awarded film “Noli Me Tangere.”

Jose Rizal’s novel “Noli Me Tangere,” which won a Famas Best Director and Best Picture, was adapted to the big screen with national artist for film Gerardo de Leon at the helm.

The film revolves around Crisostomo Ibarra, who, after seven years in Europe to study, returns to the Philippines.

His father, Don Rafael Ibarra, was sent to prison in connection with the death of a tax collector.

Since then, Don Rafael stopped receiving holy communion. He was also refused a Catholic burial by Padre Damaso, the parish priest of their town.

Meanwhile, Ibarra decides to build a school after seeing the lack of progress in his town.

But Padre Salvi opposes the plan because he is secretly worried that the project will threaten the power he wields over their town.

While laying the cornerstone of the school, Ibarra was almost killed but Elias Leopoldo Salcedo saved him.

Ibarra eventually gets implicated in a staged revolution, and is hunted down by the guardia civil.

Maria Clara, Ibarra’s sweetheart, unwittingly adds to Ibarra’s woes when she switches Ibarra’s letter with another letter that reveals her true nature.

Tandang Tacio, the old philosopher, notes that there have been many attempts to build a school in the past, but all these had failed.

The cast includes Eduardo del Mar as Crisostomo Ibarra, Edita Vital as Maria Clara, Oscar Keesee as Father Damaso, Johnny Monteiro as Father Salvi, Lina Carino as Sisa and Leopoldo Salcedo as Elias.

The film will be shown on July 12 from 1 p.m. to to 4 p.m. at the Event Centre of SM City Cebu.
