DAVAO CITY, Davao del Sur, Philippines — Two workers were reported dead and two survivors were injured while retrieval operations continued for three more workers buried in the rubble of a bridge under construction that collapsed in Barangay Malamba, Marilog District here at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, according to the Davao City Police Office (DCPO)
Ten workers of Bojus Sun (not Bohusan as earlier reported) Builders & Supply Corp. were installing a side panel of the bridge using a boom truck when the structure collapsed, burying the seven workers.
Dario Dispo, 42, a resident of Catalunan Grande who worked as a foreman, said the boom truck was positioned at the center of the bridge and that the bridge, which was about 18 meters (60 feet) above a river had collapsed on top of the seven workers into the river.
Among those who died were Jay Bangonan, 22, a mason, and Rolando Abing, 40, married, a laborer and resident of Sitio Kibakak, Barangay Malamba.
Police immediately rushed to Kibalang Hospital the injured — Meljay Bero, 29, a laborer and resident of Monkayo, Davao de Oro, and Jonathan Dispo, 38, a mason and resident of Catalunan Grande here.
The retrieval operation, led by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), is still in progress for three workers — Cris Napao, 44, a mason and resident of Balusong, Matina; Jimboy Liga, 28, a boom truck operator and resident of Catalunan Grande; and Elmer Sayson, 44, a resident of Banay-Banay, Davao Oriental.
