MANILA, Philippines — The P1,000 pension fund increase for senior citizens will surely be implemented by 2024, Franklin Quijano, chair of the  National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC), said on Monday.

The pension increase from P500 to P1,000 is mandated by the Social Pension for Indigent Senior Citizens Act, which lapsed into law in July 2022.

The NCSC explained that, by the time the law was passed, it was too late for the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to get its proposals into the National Expenditure Program.

Quijano explained that the law would be applied retroactively. So those who were senior citizens when the law was passed would get the P1,000 pension.
