School classes, gov’t offices suspended in north Quezon due to bad weather

Classes in all levels suspended in Quezon island town due to 'Maymay'

LUCENA CITY — The local governments of Infanta, General Nakar, Real, and the Polillo and Panukulan island towns in the northern part of Quezon province suspended classes at all levels Thursday (Jan. 5) due to continuous rains.

In Polillo, the authorities also suspended work in all government offices.

However, offices whose functions involve the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness and response to disasters and calamities, and the performance of other vital services shall continue with their operations and render necessary services, said the local government.

Work suspension in private companies was left to the discretion of the business owners, it added.

On Wednesday afternoon, Quezon Gov. Angelina Tan advised the public and the local disaster risk reduction and management offices in the areas affected to continue monitoring the weather.

She warned the local governments in General Nakar, Infanta, Mauban, Real, Sampaloc, and the island municipalities of Alabat, Panukulan, Perez, Polillo, and Quezon against flash floods and landslides in higher areas in the next three days.

The Quezon Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office ordered their local counterparts in northern Quezon to monitor the weather and immediately implement the necessary safety protocols if warranted.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), in its Thursday morning weather bulletin, predicted that a low pressure area would trigger rains in Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan), Bicol, Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Caraga, and Davao regions,

Pagasa also said that Metro Manila, Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, Central Luzon and Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) would likewise experience rains due to the northeast monsoon, or “amihan.” INQ
