Scores of residential homes were also damaged by the major temblor, with at least 55 houses damaged and one destroyed, according to the initial assessment report of the provincial disaster risk reduction and management council.

Ilocos Norte is under a state of calamity as it is yet to recover from the effects of Typhoon Neneng (international name: Nesat) that hit the province on Oct. 16.

Manotoc said he would urge the provincial board to declare another state of calamity due to the earthquake.

“I asked the Sangguniang Panlalawigan to also declare another state of calamity for it to be clear because this is a different calamity even though we are still in a state of calamity from Neneng and [typhoon] Obet. It should be clear that this other state of calamity is because of the earthquake,” he said.
